OAKLAND URBAN FARMING PROJECT

CLIENT: Oakland Urban Farming Project (OUFP)
In partnership with Paint The Town
Oakland, CA — 2023

OUFP partnered with Sasha Dusky to bring their street mural design to life. The objective was to visually bridge two community garden sites together on opposite sides of the street, making one cohesive space. Sasha designed the mural to be painted by the community, creating something simple, bold and colorful — inspired by the ecology of the garden. Sasha prepped stencils to help translate the art onto the street, primed the site with the team and the support of Oakland’s Paint The Town program. The day of the community painting, materials were ready to welcome all community members to help bring the artwork to life.

Gradient and detail sections were directed to adults, while children helped paint simpler areas.

With an abundance of volunteers, paint, and stencils, folks created an impromptu mural on the side wall — further tying the space together visually with vibrant colors and optimism.

The leftover paints and process learned became a template for the garden to create more signs (People Plant Power designed by Sasha!) at community painting days, further tying together the garden palette and weaving more hands into its making.
